Two Delhi police personnel were beaten up, allegedly by three youths in South Extension Part II in south Delhi late on Wednesday. Police said the hooligans also took away the service pistol of one of the policemen and fled in a white Mahindra Xylo SUV.

The victims were identified as Manoj Kumar, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) posted in the special staff of south district police, and his colleague Rajesh Kumar, a constable in the Special Cell.

The ASI’s official 9mm pistol was tucked in his waist and was tied with a rope, the other end of which was tied around his neck for safety.

The two policemen along with another colleague, Nirbhay Rana, a sub-inspector (SI) in the crime branch, were coming out of a restaurant after dinner after 11pm when the incident took place. Police said the policemen were attacked following an argument over a minor issue.

A case under section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) and 34 (common intention) was registered at Hauz Khas police station.

By Thursday evening, the Hauz Khas police had arrested two of the attackers, identified as Mahabir and Randhir, both residents of Kotla Mubarakpur. Efforts were on to nab the third absconding attacker, the senior officer said.

ASI Manoj, in his complaint, stated that he had left the police station with his official pistol and 10 live cartridges to gather information about an accused involved in a case of burglary at a jewellery shop in South campus area.

“I reached South Extension Part-II where I met my colleagues and we together had dinner at a restaurant in the basement of shop number C-14,” his complaint said.

“After dinner when I came out from the basement, I saw three youths beating up constable Rajesh. Since all three of us were not in uniform, I told the attackers that we are policemen. But the youths did not stop and attacked me. They snatched my pistol and fled in a white Xylo SUV,” added ASI Manoj, who suffered multiple injuries on his body.
