A Tata Indica car parked at the Ambala railway station since Tuesday morning looked harmless till the Delhi Police claimed on Wednesday that it was carrying explosives for a Diwali strike in Delhi - an alleged Lashkar-e-Taiba and Babbar Khalsa joint venture.
The Delhi Police had been tracking the car from Jammu, but lost it in heavy traffic in Ambala where the explosives were supposed to change hands.
Arun Kampani, deputy commissioner of police (special cell), said at a press conference in Delhi on Thursday that the intelligence alert about a terror attack came around 12 days ago.
On Wednesday evening, the team zeroed in on the unattended vehicle - parked near the parcel yard of the station near platform No 1 - and called in the local police to check it.
But the local police found only an empty box of sweets bearing the address of a shop in Jammu and two copies of vernacular dailies published from the city.
In the early hours of Thursday, the Delhi Police team found a timer concealed in the door on the driver's side and a packet of explosive under the floor mat and called in the bomb disposal experts.
After a five-hour search, the Delhi Police team recovered 5.6 kg of RDX, five timers and five detonators hidden in the car.
