Focusing on preventing crimes in public parks, Delhi Police on Tuesday flagged off 65 bicycles to be used by beat constables for patrolling eastern parts of the city.

Amulya Patnaik, Delhi Police Commissioner, said the cycles will ensure beat policemen are effectively able to patrol every nook and corners of parks, which have the scene of violent crimes in recent years.

“Since parks are visited by a large number of women and senior citizens, policemen on cycles will ensure they are not disturbed but feel a sense of security,” said Patnaik.

Ravindra Yadav, Joint CP (Eastern Range), said cycles were chosen also because they can go where traditional patrol vehicles cannot.

“The bicycle patrols will reach the narrow and heavily congested areas where mechanized vehicles find it difficult to reach and maintain a steady presence. They will be utilized for patrolling during odd hours when the residents are taking rest, since they are less disturbing,” said Yadav.
