In an initiative meant specially for the city’s senior citizens, Delhi Police have started sending safety tips through bulk SMS service. The project has been started on a trial basis in west Delhi and if successful it will be implemented in other parts of the city as well.
A team of west district police have collected details of the senior citizens and they are being sent SMSes on a daily basis. “There were a few basic rules that we were following for the safety of senior citizens. To do something new, we have started sending them SMSes. Earlier, we used to have regular meetings with them, but now we have started sending them safety tips every day,” V Renganathan, additional CP (west) said.
Delhi police already have a senior citizen security cell located at police headquarters and members of this cell visit some senior citizens daily. “Till now 11,774 senior citizens have registered with us of which 3,027 were added in the first six months of this year. During our visits, we check the security of the house apart from the status of the domestic helps, whether they are verified or not,” a senior police officer said.
As per Delhi Police’s records, about 100 senior citizens are contacted daily on phone by the senior citizen cell and at least 25 others are visited in person. “Whatever advice we have for the senior citizens, we now send them through SMS. Like day before yesterday we sent them a message that they should display the telephone numbers of relatives, friends and senior citizens’ helpline number — 1291 — at some conspicuous place, preferably near the telephone console so that they could be contacted in case of an emergency,” the officer added.
Police have a separate list of senior citizens who are living alone. Police claimed to have contacted 10,782 senior citizens telephonically and personally visited 3,681. The team from headquarters ensure that local police take adequate interest in implementing the guidelines.
