Out of nearly a dozen friends of Shobhit Modi's, Delhi Police have zeroed in on a girl, a minor, who was his junior in a leading South Delhi school.
According to police, the girl's parents were opposed to her relationship with Shobhit and had even met Shobhit's father to complain about it.
"Radhika (name changed) was doing well in school but her parents said her studies took a hit when she got involved with Shobhit. Radhika's parents had warned Shobhit several times and had even talked to him on Thursday when they had come to pick their daughter from the mall," said a senior police officer.
Police have also questioned Radhika's parents but the investigation team is tight lipped over their involvement.
"They were definitely worried as the girl is a minor and is in a relationship. They had told both Radhika and Shobhit that at this age they should concentrate on their studies," the officer added.
Police have also scanned the CCTV footage from DLF Promenade, the mall where Shobhit and his friends, including the girl, hung out during the day.
"This suggests that Radhika and Shobhit were together for over two hours. During the time at the mall, Shobhit met six friends, two of them left around 5pm, while the other three left at 7pm. Radhika stayed there and at 8:30pm she called her father to pick her," the police said.
"Initially, her father refused to pick her up as he was angry after knowing that she was with Shobhit. But later he picked her up around 9:10pm from outside the mall," the officer said.
"No one knows what happened in the next 35 minutes. Shobhit was found stabbed outside a colony gate in Vasant Kunj around 9:45pm by the guard on duty," the officer added.
At 9:10pm, Shobhit had called his parents and said that he would be home in 20 minutes. At 9:45pm the colony guard finds him collapsed at the colony gate.
"It suggests those 35 minutes were crucial. He had four serious stab wounds—one in his chest, one in abdomen and two on his back," the officer added.
Police are also questioning Shobhit's former girlfriends to get any clues.
Robbery angle ruled out
The police have ruled out robbery as an angle in the Shobhit Modi murder case as his valuables were found intact.
"He was wearing a Tissot watch and branded shoes, apart from carrying an expensive iPhone. But the attackers didn’t touch anything which ruled out the motive of robbery behind the murder," said a senior police officer, on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to media.
