The husband of a councillor, driving a BMW on a wrong lane, hit a traffic constable and carried him some distance on the car bonnet in Vasant Kunj area of southwest Delhi on Wednesday night.

Ranjeet Yadav, husband of Kishangarh councillor Ramesh Yadav, and his friend Om Prakash Yadav were arrested, police said on Thursday.

Police said constable Bishamber was hit when he tried to flag down Ranjeet’s car for being on the wrong lane. “Instead of stopping, the driver hit the constable. He then drove with the cop clinging on to the bonnet for 25 metres before halting,” said Rupinder Kumar, DCP, traffic (south).

The officer added that Ranjeet did not stop even after halting. He pushed the injured policeman, tore his uniform and threw his weight around.

“We arrested them for causing hurt and obstructing a public servant from performing duty,” said Shalini Singh, DCP (west). The incident occurred on the Mehrauli-Gurgaon road around 9.30 pm when Ranjeet was on way to his farmhouse.

Police said that the BMW did not have a valid registration number. The accused had bought the car recently.

When contacted, Ranjeet, who is out on bail, said he was not at fault. “The incident took place close to my farmhouse. The traffic policemen demand bribes from locals there. I did not beat anyone. Nothing much happened,” he said. Ranjeet is a property dealer and lives in Rajokri. His car has been impounded.

This is the fifth such case of assault on a cop on Delhi’s roads this year. On February 22, a woman hit a traffic constable near DND Flyway when he tried to stop her speeding car.

In January, three such incidents were reported. On January 11, a traffic constable was beaten up when he tried to challan a tempo owner in Sheikh Sarai. A week earlier, a woman slapped a traffic constable when he pasted a sticker on her car for parking in an unauthorized lane at Kasturba Gandhi Marg.

Even a senior cop was not spared. On January 1, DCP (Traffic) Suvashish Chaudhury received injuries when a drunk reveler hit him.
