An elderly couple was found murdered under mysterious circumstances on the first floor of their house at Vasundhara locality of Ghaziabad on Monday.

Police investigations have revealed that Rana Pratap Singh, 58, a retired air force personnel, and his wife, Dila Devi, 55, were strangulated inside their house in sector- 2B at Vasundhara.

Police suspect the couple was attacked by the assailants - 2-3 in numbers - in a robbery attempt.

Officials have also recovered a ladder, which was probably used by the assailants to gain entry to the roof of house.

"The assailants placed the ladder on the neighbouring house and entered the victim's first floor residence from a small entrance. The dead couple was found blindfolded with their mouths gagged and hands tied," senior superintendent of police (SSP) Raghubir Lal said.

Their son, Jitendra Singh, alerted the police after he found his parents dead. The son, along with his wife, lives on the ground floor of the house.

Police said the belongings of the victims were found scattered at the scene of crime. Sniffer dogs and forensic-experts were later pressed into service to look for fingerprints on the wall of the house.

"Prima facie, we suspect robbery as the motive behind the incident. But it is very peculiar that the assailants had blind-folded the couple before killing them to hide their identities. We are probing all angles to nab the assailants and find out their real motive," the SSP added.

Police said the family was under a state of shock and could not estimate the exact amount of loss during the incident.

The bodies of the victims were later sent for post-mortem examination.
