A 50-year-old scrap dealer and his wife were found murdered at their house in northwest Delhi’s Rani Bagh area on Tuesday night.Police suspect the crime may have been committed by someone known to the family.

Though cash and valuables worth around Rs 9 lakh were found missing from the residence of Satpal Garg and wife Ramkali, police said entry into the house was not forced.

Police also found three tea cups on the table in the drawing room, while Garg was found dead near the couch. It is suspected that the assailants were known to Garg and were offered tea before the crime.

“It seems the killers were familiar with the house. Three tea cups on the table in the drawing room show that the number of killers was more than one,” said a senior police who was not authorised to speak to the media.

While Garg was strangulated with a motorcycle clutch wire, his wife, who apparently fought back, was strangled after being hit on the head and face with a blunt object.

Police, however, are waiting for the autopsy reports to ascertain the exact cause of death. At 8.30pm Tuesday night, the couple’s eldest son Sanjay returned home from work to find his father’s body. He rushed his father to the hospital without realising that his mother was also in the house.

It was only when Sanjay called his friend to check on his mother that he found her body was lying was in the bedroom.
A case of murder has been registered at Subhash Place police station.

Suresh Garg, Satpal’s nephew, pointed out that the killers had searched only those places where cash and valuables had been kept. “The killers went inside the adjacent room as well but took away only my uncle’s wallet that was kept in the cupboard. If the killers were robbers, why would they leave the laptop on the bed and take away only its bag,” said Suresh.
