What is the future of the two minor children whose father has been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his wife?
A city court has directed the state government to take care of the children and ensure they get a sound education.
Sentencing accused Ashok Kumar to 30 years of imprisonment for the murder of his wife Kanchan, Additional Sessions Judge Sanjay Kumar said, "It is the responsibility of the state to bring up the children and shape them as responsible citizens.”
The court directed the chairman of the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights to take custody of the children and look after their well being.
Kumar had strangled his wife with her duppatta on September 15, 2007, and dumped the body in a jute bag. The prosecution told the court that Kumar used to beat Kanchan and was suspicious of her character.
Kanchan had reportedly told her parents that she feared for her life as her husband had resorted to beating her everyday and had threatened to kill her.
The court noted that accused has a son (8) and daughter (7), both in the custody of Kumar's sister in Bulandshahar, and there was nobody to look after them. The court said that under these circumstances, it is the duty of the court to look after the future and proper bringing of both the children.
The court said that the imprisonment of 30 years is inconsonance the manner in which the murder was planned and committed.
The victim was constantly terrified with violent acts of her husband.
