A Delhi court has permitted a Swedish couple to adopt a deaf and dumb girl, who was found abandoned outside the office of Delhi Council for Child Welfare in the Capital on March 31, 2009. The court noted till date nobody from the society has extended an arm of support for the child.

District judge Pratibha Rani accepted petition and appointed Sven Olof Edvin Persson and Ellen Maria Lammert Persson as the guardians of the girl child.

The judge said, "It can be said that the petitioner is capable of maintaining herself and the child to be adopted. It will be in the welfare of the minor child if the request of the petitioner is allowed."

The court noted the couple is living a luxurious life, which would be considered as a positive attribute for the adoption of the child.

Tarini Bahadur, general secretary of the council submitted before the court, "No Indian family living in India or abroad is willing to take the minor child as the child is deaf and dumb. Therefore, she has been offered to the petitioners, Sven and Ellen, staying abroad."

The court allowed the Swedish couple to adopt the child aged little over five and permitted them to take her custody after they executed a surety bond of Rs5 lakh.
