A Delhi court on Saturday issued summons to a former RAW officer, accused of disclosing classified information in his book on the working of the intelligence agency, and its publisher following a chargesheet against them by CBI.
The CBI had in its chargesheet accused Major General (retired) V K Singh, former Joint Secretary of Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), of revealing certain "secret informations" in violation of the Official Secrets Act in his book, which had also alleged corruption in the agency.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja took cognisance of the chargesheet filed on April nine last year and issued summons to Singh and Vivek Garg, the book's publisher, to appear before her rpt her on February 18.
Singh had written the book "India's External Intelligence: Secrets of RAW", which was printed and published by Manas Publication run by Garg. It was for the first time a book on RAW was written by someone who had actually served in the Intelligence agency.
The investigating agency on September 20, 2007 had registered a case against Singh for allegedly violating Section 5 (wrongful communication of information) of the Act.
The CBI also charged Singh under sections 120-B (Criminal Conspiracy) and 409 (Criminal breach of trust by a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Singh's counsel, however, had denied all the charges and claimed that the book exposed several lacunae in the functioning of RAW, including the "anomalies" in the procurement of equipment, lack of accountability and dependence on foreign sources.
