Bringing relief to thousands of commuters, the Delhi high court on Thursday told the state government to throw open the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor between Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand in south Delhi to all other vehicles.

The order came after the Central Road Research Institute submitted an interim report, which said that opening the corridor to all vehicles would greatly ease congestion on the 5.8km stretch.

The matter was brought to the court by the NGO Nyay Bhoomi, which filed a PIL seeking scrapping of the BRT or permission for other vehicles to ply on it.

The NGO said the BRT was not practicable for a city with only 23,000 buses and as many as 73 lakh other vehicles.

The CRRI is to submit its final report to the court on July 18.
