The Delhi government plans to set up five fast track courts to try cases of rape and sexual assault in the city.

The cabinet is likely to discuss the proposal on Tuesday.

The government, according to sources, has proposed that such cases should be disposed of in six months.

Chief minister Sheila Dikshit recently met representatives of NGOs and officials from the social welfare department to discuss the issue. The decision to set up at least five such courts was taken at the meeting.

“It has been proposed that five special courts under additional district and session judges will be set up in five districts to look into rape and sexual assault cases. We have been pressing for this for quite some time,” said a senior Delhi government official.

Delhi government officials said that 40 personnel would be sanctioned for courts.

“Some financial implications are also involved in this and all this would require the cabinet's permission.,” added the official.
