A 38-year-old jeweller and his cousin were killed and his sister critically injured after the Hyundai Verna car they were traveling in crashed into a stationary Punjab roadways bus near the Kashmere Gate inter-state bus terminal (ISBT) in the wee hours of Thursday.
The accident took place around 1.45 am on Ring road near the ISBT entrance. The victims were returning home after attending their nephew's engagement ceremony in south Delhi's Chattarpur.
The deceased were identified as Mohit Gupta, 38 and his cousin Dheeraj Gupta, 38. They lived with their families at Riviera Apartments, on Mall Road near Delhi University, said police. Dheeraj's wife gave birth to their son just 15 days ago.
The deceased owned two renowned jewellery showrooms in Chandni Chowk area. Dheeraj was driving the car when the accident occured.
The injured woman was identified as Mohit's sister Gunjan Gupta, 35, who had come to Delhi from Surat to attend the ceremony.
Police said the car was moving at high speed and the driver could not see the bus, which was apparently standing illegally on the road, on time. The car crashed straight into the bus from behind.
The impact was so powerful that half of the car got stuck under the bus with the victims trapped inside it.
Meanwhile, Gunjan, who was seated on the rear seat, was rescued by some onlookers and staff of a PCR van, the police had to take help from the rescue teams of the fire department to cut the vehicles and rescue the two cousins, who were stuck on their front seats.
"It took over half an hour to rescue the two victims. All the three were rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced Mohit and Dheeraj dead on arrival. Gunjan, who sustained multiple fractures in her body, is undergoing treatment at Sant Parmanand Hospital located in north Delhi's Civil Lines," said a senior police officer adding they were informed about the accident through a PCR call.
"There is a possibility that Dheeraj might have fallen asleep. We have booked the bus driver, Sunil Singh, for stopping the vehicle at a non-designated place. The bus was also confiscated," added the officer.
