Seventy years after it was first constructed, Connaught Place, the heart of Delhi, has got a brand new look.
The ‘new’ CP is not only good on the eyes but dedicated walkways have made it pedestrian friendly too. Not only this, parking woes of shoppers will also ease, as work on the business district’s parking lots in both the Inner and Outer circles is nearly complete.
For close to a year, many parking lots were dismantled and finding parking space had become a nightmare. However, with work gaining pace, there are greener parking lots with an increase of nearly 20 per cent space in the Inner Circle. CP can now accommodate 3,000 cars at a given point of time.
Under the restoration work, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) aligned a number of pavements, making additional space for parking. The lots have become bigger as all the debris that used to surround the Inner Circle has also been removed.
“In C Block, the number of cars that can be parked has increased to nearly 75-80, which is a hike of about 15 per cent,” said Atul Bhargava, president of New Delhi Trader’s Association (NDTA).
The civic agency has completed all the work related to parking area in Block A, C and F while work in other blocks will be completed soon.
In the Outer Circle, the parking lots have been carpeted with concrete and ready for use.
“We have restored all the parking space and people coming to CP will not face any inconvenience anymore. Parking has become very smooth,” he added.
In the Inner Circle, the aesthetics of the parking lots have been improved by setting up enclosures for plants and carpeting the area with carpet grass. New benches have also been placed to add to the look.
