The CPI on Saturday condemned the police firing on agitating Gujjars in Rajasthan and charged the BJP government there with "playing politics" over the protestors' demand for Scheduled Tribe status.

"It is the BJP regime in Rajasthan which is solely responsible for playing politics with the Gujjars on the one side and the scheduled tribes on the other," the party's Central Secretariat said in a statement.

The party said such contentious issues should be settled through dialogue and negotiations in a democracy "and not be letting loose the police on the agitators." The CPI also demanded adequate compensation to the families of the victims.
