The CPI (M) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) have criticised the BJP for making promises to the Gujjar community about including them in scheduled tribe category but subsequently doing little to fulfill the pre-poll assurance. That failure has led to the current unrest, which was triggered in Rajasthan but is now spreading to neighbouring states, the parties said.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Party blamed the "opportunist policies and false promises of the BJP state government" led to the present situation. It added that danger of the confrontation between the communities of Gujjars and Meenas spreading to other states is real now.
"The state government in Rajasthan and the Central government should take all appropriate measures to control the situation and restore peace and normal life in the disturbed areas," CPI (M)’s politburo said in the statement.
Amar Singh, SP general secretary, besides blaming the BJP, had also accused the Congress party of misleading the Gujjar community on the reservation issue. "Both parties have played with the emotion of the community. First it was the Congress and then the BJP. Even BJP’s own MLAs are now coming out in support of the Gujjars," Singh said.
He added that the SP party supports the demand of the Gujjars but also condemns the violence.
