More than two months after a middle-aged informant was allegedly beaten up by two senior custom officials in their north Delhi office, the police are yet to arrest the accused duo.
Bhupender Kumar, a resident of northwest Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh and a veteran informant of the customs and excise department who has received many cash awards, was severely assaulted by superintendents Devender Malik and Virender on February 6.
“Around 3:30pm on February 6, I went to the Income Tax Office (ITO) building at the IP Estate to meet the commissioner to share some information about east Delhi-based businessmen who were evading tax and other duties, like usual,” Kumar said.
“However, instead of allowing me to meet him in person, despite having sought an appointment from him, Devender and Virender insisted that I share the information with them instead of the commissioner,” he claimed.
When Kumar refused to do so and attempted to contact the commissioner directly, the accused duo allegedly began manhandling him before proceeding to beat him with rods and sticks.
“I don’t know what their intention was but they kept threatening to kill me. They were yelling that it was their right to pass on the information to their commissioner and if they couldn’t do it, they would not allow me to do it either,” Kumar claimed.
Meanwhile, someone who was accompanying Kumar took him to the Lok Nayak Hospital. Doctors claimed his left ear has been permanently damaged.
The police refused to register the case at first but later registered the case against unknown persons instead of the two superintendents.
It was only after Kumar approached the Delhi Government that the Station house Officer (SHO) of the IP Estate police station registered a case of common intention and causing grievous hurt naming the accused duo.
