“This year, the number of candidates who came for admissions on day one is much higher than last year,” said V.K. Kawatra, principal, Hansraj College.

At Shri Ram College of Commerce, 156 students have already taken admission in BCom (H) and another 87 have secured their seat for Economics (H).

Defying convention, increased cut-offs in the Science courses attracted a lot of candidates this year. Miranda House, for instance, has admitted 61 students in Chemistry (H) already against 54 seats. In Physics (H) too, the college has filled up 83 per cent seats.

“Despite the Science cut-offs being raised by up to 4 per cent, the response was surprising,” said Pratibha Jolly, principal, Miranda House.

Off-campus colleges also registered more number of students this year on day one.

Colleges such as Kamla Nehru College, Gargi College and Lady Shri Ram College witnessed a lot of applicants. “We have increased the cut-offs in few subjects considerably. Despite that, a lot of students came for admissions on day one as compared to last year,” said Madhu Pruthi, principal, Keshav Mahavidyalaya.

Does that mean there may not be a second list for these subjects? There is no reason to press the panic button yet, said most principals.

“A lot of students move out to engineering courses later, so this may not be the final picture,” added Jolly. The counselling sessions for I.P. University and the All India Engineering Entrance Examination are still to take place.

Akash Mehra, a candidate said: “I am waiting for the counselling sessions of I.P. University engineering seats but I’ve reserved my seat for the BA (Programme) as a back-up option.”

BCom (H), BCom (Programme), Economics (H) were the courses that registered most students across colleges.

Among the Science courses, it was Chemistry (H), Physics (H) and Computer Science (H) and in Humanities, it was Political Science (H), History (H) and Journalism (H).
