A court here on Monday sentenced DDA's former joint director to three years imprisonment and his two relatives to two years jail term for depriving flat allottees of their dwellings and selling them to others by fraudulent means.

Special Judge V K Maheshwari also imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on Madhukar, the then joint director DDA, besides the jail term. Madhukar's father-in-law Gian Chand Kaushal and brother-in-law Devender Kaushal were slapped with the fine of Rs 25,000.

The court refused to show any leniency to the convicts saying public servants indulging in corruption should be dealt with iron hand as they spread a feeling of mistrust and loss of faith among the people through their acts.

The court, in its judgement, also reflected upon the difficulty being faced by the people in Delhi to own a house.

"It is a cherished desire of everyone to have one's own house. To have his own house in Delhi is a herculean task. People work hard throughout their life and make all-out efforts to fulfil their dream to own their personal house. To have one's own house in Delhi now a days is the greatest achievement in the life of every middle class citizen," the court said.

The court had framed charges against the accused under the provisions of IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act on August seven, 1998, after CBI alleged Madhukar and others hatched a conspiracy for obtaining pecuniary advantage by way of allotment of flats of several persons and selling them dishonestly in 1980s.
