DDA wants Delhi Metro in Narela, willing to share cost

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA), which built these sub cities, now wants the Metro’s Midas touch for its third sub city, Narela, which was developed in the early 90s.
DDA has requested the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to connect Narela with the rest of the city, as part of its phase 4 expansion.
The land development agency has also offered to fund the project on the same lines as adopted for extension of metro to Dwarka, a DDA spokeswoman said. DDA had paid 10% of the cost of Metro’s expansion in Dwarka.
Spread over an area of 7,465 hectares, the housing pockets developed by DDA in Narela can accommodate a population of about 1.62 million. Despite being a perfectly planned sub-city with wide roads, markets, parks, abundant water and power, Narela is a ghost town.
The thousands of flats in the sub-city have a handful of residents scattered across different pockets. Narela is 42 km away from Connaught Place and lacks public transport.
“It is understood that this proposal of requesting the DMRC for connectivity, has already been approved by Lt. Governor Tejendra Khanna, the chairman, DDA,” said a statement from DDA.
“About 50 to 55% of the housing requirement in this sub-city will be for urban poor and economically weaker sections and therefore, an efficient public transport system is required to provide connectivity to the sub-city,” the spokeswoman said.
DMRC could not be contacted for an official comment. “Narela is part of Metro’s master plan, but this depends on the final approval,” said a DMRC official.
