Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday said definite action will be taken on the findings of the report of the Srikrishna Commission, which enquired the 1992-93 Mumbai riots.
She said this while addressing the general body meeting of the Congress Parliamentary party.
Gandhi's statement came close on the heels of Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh apprising her last week of the progress made in the matter, which has raised a controversy with several parties and organisations demanding stringent and early action and Shiv Sena warning of "serious consequences" if action is taken.
Deshmukh had then said that he himself was "not happy" with the implementation of the report and had detailed to her the steps taken to expedite it.
Referring to the Communal Violence (Prevention, Control and Rehabilitation of Victims) Bill currently in Parliament, she said a few civil society groups have met her and given a number of suggestions on the Bill, which are being considered by the government.
