At least 11 bikers were arrested for performing stunts and wreaking havoc on arterial central Delhi routes on the occasion of Shab-e-Barat on Monday night, the police said.

The accused, all of whom are in their early 20s, were arrested from and near the India Gate monument between midnight and early morning. Two policemen deputed on pickets installed in the area were also injured during the episode.

“There were hundreds of bikers who took to the streets last night. Many of them were creating chaos on roads in addition to trying to seek access to areas around India Gate which are off-limits for general public due to security concerns,” said an officer.

As per the police, the bikers, most of whom were found to be residents of north, east, northeast and southeast Delhi, were intercepted at the pickets near the monument when they were performing dangerous stunts.

When they were pulled up, the police claimed, their associates started pelting them with stones. The policemen were rushed to the RML Hospital and the offending bikers overpowered and detained on the spot.

“As many as 90 motorcycles were seized from all over the Capital for one violation or another. Apart from the arrested bikers, several others have been booked for traffic offences,” the officer maintained.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Government and the Ministry of Home Affairs asked the Delhi Police to file a reply on the incident and the action taken by them against the errant bikers who were detained.
