The Delhi Police has been swift throughout the year in registering cases of rapes and molestations.

But the performance of the force in the disposal of such cases and filing chargesheets has been not very impressive, Delhi Police statistics have revealed.

Out of 2,001 rape cases registered this year till December 3, the Delhi police have filed chargesheets in about 1,308 cases. It means that only about 65% cases reached the chargesheet level, while a good 35% cases are still pending investigation.

Similarly, almost 3,000 cases of molestation are pending investigation against over 4,100 cases that had been registered till December 3 this year.

Senior police officers attribute the slow rate of disposal of rape and molestation cases to lesser number of women investigating officers available with the force and a delay in receiving forensic reports. As per the instructions of the home ministry, cases of rape have to be probed only by women investigators.

According to numbers available, only 773 chargesheets in rape cases were filed within the mandatory period - 20 days of the arrest of the first accused. In 312 cases, chargesheets were filed within 30 days of arrest of the first accused.

In 152 cases, the chargesheets were filed within 60 days, whereas in 71 cases the investigating officers took more than 60 days to file the chargesheets.

District-wise statistics of rape cases showed that south Delhi police topped the chart in rape cases, with 261 cases having been registered this year till December 3. South Delhi is followed by southeast and outer districts police that registered 257 and 248 rape cases registered, respectively, this year. The New Delhi district police registered the lowest number of rape cases, only 20, this year.
