The Delhi Cantonment railway station will now boast of a new, swanky station building, which was built as part of Railway’s upgrade package for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2010.

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the building along with Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Northwest Delhi Member of Parliament Krishna Tirath on Sunday.

Along with the station building, Banerjee also flagged off three new trains—Delhi Sarai Rohilla–Sadulpur Express, Tughlakabad (Delhi)-Vapi (Mumbai) “Tej Shree Parcel Sewa” and the extension of 2993/2994 Bandra- Jaipur Express up to Delhi Sarai Rohilla. These services are a part of the budgetary plan announcement.

“Most of the projects announced in the budget will be happening in less than two months of announcement,” Banerjee told reporters after the event. “The Duronto trains between New Delhi and Sealdah, Delhi and Pune and Howrah and Mumbai are ready to run soon,” she said.

“The modernisation of the Delhi Cantonment station is part of the ongoing work keeping the Commonwealth Games in mind and the work was sanctioned at a total cost of Rs 5.13 crore,” said a senior Northern Railway official.

The building is a fusion of the old and new, with its existing heritage structure being merged with a modern one.

At the request of Dikshit, the 4705/4706 Delhi Sarai Rohilla - Sadulpur train has been named as Pragati Express.

With the extension of Bandra-Jaipur Exp to Delhi Sarai Rohilla, the train services between Delhi and Mumbai will be further be enhanced.

A non – stop parcel service “Tej Shree Parcel Sewa” or Faster parcel Service, the first of its kind will be running from Tughlakabad (Delhi) -Vapi (near Mumbai).
