The Capital can’t wait for the upcoming Commonwealth Games to begin. This was conveyed with warmth, colour and cooperation as Delhiites gathered at a gala event organized to celebrate the countdown of just 200 days to go for the international sporting event at the India Gate on Sunday afternoon.

Dubbed the ‘200-days-to-go’ milestone event, the heat could do little to keep scores of enthusiasts of away from a 200-foot canvas and 200 kites to reiterate the theme of ‘Green Games’ at the historic war memorial.

“It will be one of the most memorable events where my family has displayed its art,” said 80-year-old Bhai Mian, a kite enthusiast who crafted 1,000 special kites for the event.

“My only regret is that I couldn’t be there due to ill health. However, I’m proud that two generations of my family including my son Jamal and his children were present and performed the feat of flying 151 kites on a single thread,” said the veteran kite-flyer, one of whose claims to fame is flying 1,184 kites on a single string at a kite-flying event organized at the UAE in 1993.

As Bhai Mian’s creations adorned the sky, veteran painters such as Satish Gujral and Jatin Das created their own mosaic on the ground.

“I consider it a great occasion for the country and I am happy and proud to be part of the Games,” said Satish Gujral.

“As we get closer to the Games, our sense of anticipation as well as our confidence that we can deliver the best Games ever grows,” said Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman, Organising Committee, Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi.
