Two minors allegedly broke into a church in east Delhi’s Rohini and damaged photos of Jesus and Mother Mary and decamped with donations worth several lakh rupees on Friday morning, police said.
The incident took place around 7.30 am at St Basil Orthodox Church located in C block of Rohini Sector 3 and was caught on CCTV camera. A senior police officer said that a case has been registered at Rohini (south) police station regarding the incident.
“A case has been registered under sections 379 (theft) and 441 (trespass) of IPC. The two accused were caught on CCTV cameras,” the officer said. Police said that the footage accessed by them shows two men scaling the church boundary wall with a rope, breaking a window of the main building and entering the complex around 4am.
They first damaged the photographs of Jesus and Mary and then broke open the donation box. They remained in the church for nearly an hour before fleeing from the same window with more than ₹2.5 lakh in cash.
The vandalism of the church was first noticed by a security guard, police said. When the guard arrived in the morning and entered the church through the main door, he found that the premises had been vandalised.
He quickly informed the priest of the church George Kurian Thomas, who later found that the Holy Cross had been vandalised too and the donation box was empty. A PCR call was made around 7.30am.
A team of senior police officers soon arrived at the spot along with a team from the Forensic Science Laboratory.
Police sources said that the two men were later identified and turned out to be minors. They were apprehended on Friday night. The boys allegedly broke into the church to make quick money by stealing from the donation box.
The incident comes two years after a Christmas crib was burned to ashes on the premises of a church in Rohini in January 2015.
Few weeks earlier, a stone was thrown at a church in Jasola in south east Delhi in December 2014. The same month, a church was vandalised in Dilshad Garden.
