Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will attend Mother Teresa’s canonisation ceremony on September 4 in Vatican City.
According to Delhi government officials, the CM accepted the invitation of the Missionaries of Charity on Wednesday. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee will also attend the ceremony.
Mother Teresa, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, will be added to the list of saints by Pope Francis in September. She was beatified (first step towards sainthood) in 2003.
Kejriwal worked with the Missionaries of Charity for two months in 1992 before he joined the Indian Revenue Service.
He jumped to her defence earlier this year when RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said her service for the poor was aimed at converting them to Christianity.
“I worked with Mother Teresa for a few months at Nirmal Hriday ashram in Kolkata. She was a noble soul. Please spare her,” Kejriwal had tweeted then.
