A Delhi police officer was repeatedly stabbed with a screwdriver on Friday morning after he tried to stop two ‘suspicious looking’ men for checking in north-east Delhi’s Zafrabad.

The policeman, an assistant sub-inspector, however, fought back and held on to one of the attackers till his colleague stepped in and overpowered the man.

The arrested man turned out to be a vehicle thief, Navin, 24, who had at least two previous cases against him, said AK Singla, DCP (northeast).

Police said assistant sub-inspector Virendra received a total of five stab wounds, the worst of which was a cut under his left eye. DCP Singla, however, said that there was no immediate threat to the policeman’s eye.

Virendra and a head constable were on out on patrolling duty near Ghoda Chowk in Zafrabad on Friday morning when they noticed two bikers. Finding their activity suspicious, Virendra stopped the duo for checking.

“But the two men tried to escape from the spot. When they began running, Virendra caught hold of them. That is when one of the men pulled out a screwdriver he was carrying with him and attacked the policeman,” said the DCP.

But the policeman refused to let go. He held on to the suspect, even as he was repeatedly being stabbed with the sharp object on his hands and chest. The last attack landed just under Virendra’s eye, but the policeman did not loosen his grip, said the DCP.

Virendra’s fightback gave enough time for his colleague to get down from the gypsy and rush to his rescue. While the one suspect managed to flee, the man who attacked Virendra was caught. Reinforcements were soon summoned to the spot and the attacker arrested.

The attacker was later identified as Naveen, a 24-year-old resident of Ambedkar Basti. A background check on him revealed him to be a vehicle thief, police alleged.
