Delhi police said Mohit had been absconding since the murder of his cousin and wife on Monday morning. The two women had been stabbed multiple times allegedly with a needle.

Nearly 24 hours after he allegedly murdered his wife and cousin in north Delhi, a 28-year-old man killed himself by hanging from a pipe in a field in a Kanpur village in the early hours of Tuesday, police said.

Before hanging himself from a tube well pipe, Mahender alias Mohit made desperate but unsuccessful attempts to kill himself. “Mohit tried popping sulphas pills, but when that did not kill him, he slit his right wrist,” said Jatin Narwal, DCP (north).

A shaving blade, a bottle of sulphas tablets and some homeopathic medicines - used to treat impotence – were recovered from the alleged suicide spot. It remained unclear whether he used the homeopathic medicine to attempt suicide or he was taking them on prescription No suicide note was found, police said.

Mohit’s body was found in Kanpur Dehat, around three kilometres from his home, around 5.15 am on Tuesday by a Delhi Police team that had been sent to Kanpur to find him. “We found the blood stained clothes and his wife’s mobile phone from him,” said the DCP. Narwal denied that Mohit met anyone from his family before committing suicide.

Mohit had allegedly used a kitchen knife and a screwdriver to inflict more than a dozen wounds each on the two women — his wife Premlatha, and 22-year-old cousin sister, Soniya. The bodies of the two women were found in Soniya’s home in Wazirabad village in north Delhi around 11 am on Monday.

The triple deaths mean that several circumstances surrounding the murders may never be known. However, police said long-term harassment over unfulfilled dowry demands, combined with suspicion of infidelity, triggered Premlatha’s murder.

DCP Narwal quoted Premlatha’s father as alleging that Mohit had been harassing her for dowry ever since they got married around four months ago. “He had demanded Rs 5 lakh cash and a 150 cc motorcycle. However, Premlatha’s family managed a 100 cc bike only,” Narwal said, quoting the victim’s father.

“As per her father, the relations between the couple were also strained because Mohit used to suspect Premlatha of speaking to another man,” the DCP said.

According to another investigator, the immediate trigger for the murder in the early hours of Monday, was a phone call that aroused Mohit’s suspicion. He was drinking at that time. The brutality with which he repeatedly stabbed Premlatha suggested how much he hated his wife.

As for Soniya, Narwal said she could have been killed for possibly intervening in the violence and being an eyewitness to the crime. Soniya too was stabbed multiple times, her head stuffed into the toilet and her mobile phone smashed, prompting investigators to probe if her killing too had anything to do with hate.

“Soniya had undergone a gallbladder surgery a few days ago. Her stitches had not even healed yet and she was to visit a doctor on Monday. But this did not make the killer spare her,” said an investigator.

Unemployed for the last few months, Mohit lived with his wife Premlatha in Agra. His cousin, Soniya, lived with her father and brother in Wazirabad village. Since Soniya had a gallbladder surgery a few days ago, she needed someone to care for her at home.

But with her father and brother having to leave for their village in UP’s Auraiya a week ago for some work, Mohit was requested to come down to Delhi and look after her. Mohit and his wife had been staying with Soniya for the last one week.
