A 60-year-old inebriated man allegedly killed his son by stabbing him in his chest with a knife in northwest Delhi’s Bhalswa Dairy on Tuesday night. Police said the elderly man was drunk when he attacked his son in a fit of rage following an argument over his drinking habit.

Initial probe revealed that Chandrika often consumed alcohol and beat up his wife. His son, Gyanu, did not like his father ill-treating and misbehaving with his mother. They allegedly had frequent fights over the issue.

On Tuesday around 8 pm, Chandrika returned home in inebriated. Chandrika’s wife Saraswati, his three children Gyanu, Jugnu, Suraj and Sandhya, and grandson Suraj were present in the house. A few minutes later, Chandrika started hurling abuses at Suraj.

When Saraswati tried to stop him, Chandrika got enraged and began abusing her. When despite her repeated requests to stop using abusive language, Chandrika did not stop, Gyanu intervened and objected to his father’s behaviour.

“This enraged Chandrika further and he started abusing Gyanu as well. An argument broke out between Chandrika and Gyanu during which Chandrika went to the kitchen, picked up the kitchen knife and stabbed Gyanu in his chest. Gyanu fell on the floor and started bleeding,” said a senior police officer.

The family members raised an alarm and Gyanu was rushed to Babu Jag Jivan Ram Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on admission. The hospital authorities informed the police about the murder. A police team arrived and took the body in their custody. They reached Gyanu’s home and arrested Chandrika.

Milind Dumbre, deputy commissioner of police (northwest), said that a case of murder was registered against Chandrika and he was arrested. “Gyanu suffered a deep stab injury in the right side of his chest,” he said.

Chandrika works as a scrap dealer. Gyanu helped his father in the business.
