From cosmetics to spirituality, from ‘prices on request’ to bargain sales, there is much to want in the Delhi’s first big mall, writes Pallavi Polanki.

They call it the shopper’s paradise not for nothing. From cosmetics to spirituality, from ‘prices on request’ to bargain sales, there is much to want in the Capital’s first big mall. Ansal Plaza, many say, introduced them to what has now become part of Delhi’s popular culture — the “mall experience”.

Shopping, eating out, watching movies, checking out the crowd or simply hanging out with friends suddenly became an attractive proposition. Himangi Tiwari, a young business executive at a multinational company, has been going to Ansal Plaza since the time it opened. “Every time I think ‘mall’, I think Ansal Plaza. I enjoy shopping there. Usually, when there is a discount sale at one store, other stores too offer similar bargains. Also, the mall has a lovely open air sitting area,” she said. For some it has become a habit.

“Every weekend, I’m here with my friends and we go window-shopping. I just love checking out the clothes stores,” said 21-year old Meghna Singh, checking out the latest designs of her favourite jeans brand. On lazy afternoons, especially in winter, the plaza’s amphi-theatre is a favourite hang-out for shoppers to catch a bit of sun.

“It is fun to hang out here with friends. After the shopping, we like to sit here and check out the crowd,” said Meenu Menon, a Delhi University student. With big brands eyeing you from giant-size banners, music playing from speakers, and videos showing on giant TV screens, the shopper’s attention is constantly engaged.

Three shopping bags in hand, Arvind Kumar, a software engineer, has just finished shopping for this son’s sixth birthday. “The kids love coming here. It is a nice outing for the family. We grab a quick bite after the shopping. Coming to the mall is great entertainment option.” Regular shoppers also look forward to the shows at the amphi theatre on special days.
