Ratna Gaur (46), a housewife from Vasant Kunj, bought only 1 kg onion from Sarojini Nagar market on Tuesday.

"In my area, onion is selling at Rs 80 per kg. I can't stop buying but since I had come here for shopping, I am taking home onions also," Gaur said.

Scores of Delhiites continued to buy onions at prices ranging between R70 and R80 per kg at retail outlets across the city on Tuesday.

The situation did not improve even when supply at the wholesale markets improved.

Retail price of onions had shot up across the city over the weekend as traders blamed shortage of supply due to un-seasonal rains in areas that send onions to Delhi.

Compared to a mere 730 tonnes onions on Monday, the arrivals increased to 1,140 tonnes on Tuesday, bringing down wholesale price by Rs 5 per kg.

"The wholesale prices at the mandi ranged between R15 (small onion) and R50 (best quality)," said IA Khan, joint secretary of Azadpur marketing committee.

However, wide media coverage about increased prices and reported shortage resulted in retailers continuing with increased rates.

The retail prices ranged from R80 per kg in posh colonies like Vasant Kunj to R70 per kg in Sarojini Nagar.

With no price control mechanism on retail trade, middlemen across the national Capital took full advantage of the situation to increase prices and shifted the burden on the common man.

And to top it, there was no respite even at Mother Dairy's Safal outlets.

After selling at R50 per kg on Monday, prices here also shot up with onions selling at R65 per kg (loose) and R67 per kg (best/packed) on Tuesday.

There are approximately 400 Safal outlets run under the umbrella of the city-based diary giant across the national capital region.
