It was a double whammy for the Delhiites: No respite from the heat outside as well as inside the house.
The reason: most parts of the city reeled under severe powers cuts, ranging from one to four hours.
Several areas in south, east and north Delhi faced outages for up to three hours while the residents of several localities in west Delhi complained of power cuts that stretched up to four hours.
This, despite chief minister Sheila Dikshit directing the distributing companies to ensure uninterrupted power supply just yesterday. She had asserted that there was no gap between the demand and supply. "We have adequate power. Power cuts are happening not because of shortage of power. Currently, we have around 100 mega watt more than what is our requirement," Dikshit had said.
However, complaints of power outages did not stop. "There was no power in our locality for four hours," said a resident of Janakpuri in West Delhi. The power cuts made life miserable for the citizens as mercury soared to touch 44.1 degree Celsius, the season's highest as yet.
"The heat was unbearable. What made it worse was that there was no power in my locality for about three hours," said Vijay Banik of Karawal Nagar in northeast Delhi.
A power department official said that the peak demand was recorded at 4,365 mega watt Tuesday against Monday's 4,526 MW. These power outages are also affecting water treatment at several plants in the city, which may affect water supply adversely.
