The Delhi high court on Tuesday granted 'absolute' stay on the criminal proceedings against Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty in a case filed against him for allegedly threatening a stunt man four years ago.
The court admitted a plea filed by Puran Chauhan, a stunt man, who accused the actor of threatening him and not paying him any money for his services while shooting for the movie 'The Little God Father' in 2007.
While hearing Shetty's plea seeking quashing of the trial court's January 15, 2010, summoning order following Chauhan's complaint case against him, justice AK Pathak admitted the matter and said, "This court's interim order staying the criminal proceeding is made remain absolute."
The prefix 'absolute' means the stay order will continue till the disposal of the case.
Justice Pathak passed the order after Chauhan refused the court's suggestion to opt for a compromise with Shetty.
Shetty's counsel Vineet Handa submitted that the litigation was initiated against the actor with an intention to extort money and also claimed that Chauhan had forged a letter to claim the money.
Meanwhile, he alleged that Chauhan, who is physically challenged, had misbehaved and tried to assault him. The court asked the counsel to lodge a police complaint against Chauhan.
The trial court had issued summons to Shetty, owner of Popcorn Entertainment, on a complaint filed by Chauhan, who claimed to have helped Shetty as assistant director in making the film 'Little Godfather'.
Chauhan had also submitted a CD before the court containing the threats issued to him by Shetty and the underworld.
In the complaint filed in the court in 2008, Chauhan claimed that the actor owed R50 lakh to him as per the term and conditions of the contract. He alleged that Shetty did not pay him the money despite taking his services in the Bollywood venture.
