A 41-year-old Delhi Police head constable shot himself dead with his service pistol at a police beat box, near Shahabad Dairy police station late Thursday night. The bullet pierced through his neck and hit another constable in his shoulder. The injured constable has been identified as Rajesh.

Rishipal, deputy commissioner of police (Rohini district), said the head constable, Har Bhagwan, was depressed because of personal reasons.

“The head constable’s wife suspected him of having an extra-marital affair and they fought often,” said the DCP. Bhagwan was a native of Punjab. He is survived by his parents, wife, and three children who live in Rohini area. His parents live in Punjab.

A senior police officer said the incident took place around 11pm. Three more policemen, including Constable Rajesh, were present in the beat box when the incident occurred.

“Head constable Bhagwan was talking to his wife over telephone. He was arguing with her over some issue and after a few minutes he disconnected in anger,” said the officer.

When one of the policemen asked Bhagwan if he would leave for home, he took out his service pistol and cocked it. Constable Rajesh rushed to snatch the weapon from his hand. But before he could reach him, Bhagwan shot a bullet in his neck. It pierced his head and hit Rajesh’s shoulder.

The two were rushed to Baba Saheb Ambedkar hospital where Bhagwan was declared brought dead. The condition of the injured cop was stated to be out of danger.
