The health of Govind Ram Jethani, who was found living with his wife’s corpse at Kalkaji in south Delhi, is deteriorating. His nephew, Narinder Jethani, told HT on Wednesday that he wanted an NGO to come forward for help as he may not be able to take care of him on his own.
Ninety-year-old Govind was admitted to a private hospital in Safdarjung Enclave on Tuesday. Narinder, 57, said his uncle is running high fever and has not spoken to anyone in the family yet. “He has many relatives in Delhi. But they don’t want to associate themselves with him. I want an NGO to offer help. I am also ageing and cannot take care of him,” said Narinder, a businessman.
Govind had lived with the decomposing corpse of his 85-year-old wife, Gopi, for four days before he came out of their home on Monday morning and asked a neighbour for help. The neighbour called the police, who later traced the nephew to Safdarjung Enclave. Govind and his wife had been living in Kalkaji for the last 42 years. They did not have a child.
The couple appeared to live in penury and did not interact much with the neighbours. A vegetable vendor parked outside their house said they hardly even switched on the lights in the house. Police said Gopi died a natural death though when they first entered the house on Monday, Govind wanted them to be quiet lest they wake her up.
The police said Govind suffers from dementia and does not remember anything. Doctors also tried to speak to him but he didn’t respond, said family members.
