A 20-year-old woman was battered to death with a brick by her husband after she refused to give him Rs 2,000. The incident took place in north Delhi’s Burari in the early hours of Saturday.

The victim, identified as Pinki, was killed on the day of her one-year-old son’s birthday, the police said.

The incident came to light around 4.30am. The accused, Shanu, was arrested from the spot as he did not flee after killing his wife. The 25-year-old had been unemployed for the past several months.

Pinki and Shanu, a police officer said, had married for love around three years ago and have a one-year-old son. On Friday night, Pinki’s niece, Laxmi, had come to the couple’s house from Jahangirpuri to celebrate their son’s first birthday.

“The same night, Shanu asked his wife to give him Rs 2,000, which she refused and said she did not have that much money. The couple had an argument after which Shanu threatened to kill her and left the house,” said the police officer. According to Laxmi, who is the sole eyewitness in the case, Shanu returned home late at night and went to sleep in his room.

“Around 4am, Laxmi, who was sleeping heard Pinki scream from the bathroom. She went there and saw Shanu repeatedly attacking his wife with a brick. When Laxmi tried to rescue Pinki, Shanu asked her to leave, saying he would kill her too. Laxmi alerted the neighbours about the incident and they called the police.
