A man strangled his 26-year-old wife in east Delhi’s Geeta Colony on Monday night for not handing over gifts she had received from her brother on Raksha Bandhan.
The woman, identified as Ravneet Kaur, got married to Paramjeet Singh, 29, in May last year. The couple has a two-month-old daughter. Her family has alleged that she was killed for dowry. An SDM enquiry has been launched into the incident.
A police officer said they received a phone call early Tuesday morning from the couple’s neighbour about Ravneet’s murder. The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.
A police officer said that Paramjeet fled the house, leaving behind his wife’s body in the house soon after killing her. He has been arrested.
“Since he wasn’t at the house when we arrived, the needle of suspicion pointed at his involvement. Some neighbours told us that they had heard the couple arguing in the evening,” said the officer.
Initial investigations revealed that Ravneet had gone to her parents’ home in Rajouri Garden to celebrate Raksha Bandhan on Sunday. Her brother had given her Rs 1,500 and some gifts.
“Ravneet returned on Monday afternoon and Singh asked her to hand over the cash and gifts to him. She refused after which an argument broke out between them. After midnight, Singh strangled her while she was sleeping. He took their daughter to his parents’ house and returned home after leaving the baby with them. We arrested him from outside his home,” added the officer.
Paramjeet used to run a travel agency but had to shut down his business after incurring heavy losses and was currently unemployed.
