The 31-year-old Mohammad Khalid, a school dropout, was arrested on Tuesday for harassing more than 1,500 women by sending them porn videos, vulgar photos, incriminating text messages and dirty jokes. He had a collection of over 2,000 phone numbers of women.
“I did that only to pretty women, not others. I used to check their WhatsApp profile pictures and if I found them attractive, I used to start chatting with them. It was harmless flirting and I did it for fun. It gave me a kick,” he allegedly told police, justifying his perverted action.
The man from old Delhi’s Sadar Bazar area used three prepaid SIM cards, which he procured through fake identities, to send the salacious content.
“The man had been tormenting innocent women … His arrest will be big relief to them. While some came forward to register a complaint, many of them just kept quiet, which encouraged him to target more women,” DCP (Northwest) Vijay Singh said.
He even put a few women’s marriages on the brink “as their husbands started doubting them of having an affair with him”, the officer said.
Police launched a hunt when a woman approached them on May 30 with a complaint that a man was harassing her for a month and threatened to kill her after she warned him.
Using digital surveillance, stakeouts and stealth, the investigators located shops that sold the SIM cards and where he used to get his phones recharged for talk-time and data. “He was arrested from a mobile shop in Sadar Bazar when he came to get another recharge,” Singh said.
Police seized his mobile phones and SIM cards along with a stockpile of more than 60GB of porn video clips, photos and obscene content. His phone’s contact list had 2,000 numbers of women mostly from Delhi and other NCR areas, saved with code names.
“We recovered chats and text messages that he sent to over 1,500 women. When questioned, he said he randomly called a number and if he liked the woman’s voice, he used to save her number,” an officer said.
If a woman warned him of police action, he allegedly threatened to morph their WhatsApp profile pictures with pornographic images and upload them online. “But warnings seldom worked … he did not care. He thought no one can catch him since he used fake identities to get the phone numbers,” the officer said.
Police found an element of revenge in his action. He apparently started despising women after some acquaintances with whom he tried to develop a relationship rejected him because of his short height — 4 feet, 10 inches.
“Whenever he approached a woman for friendship, she rebuffed him straightaway and mocked about his height. Frustrated, he started hating women and decided to harass them with obscene messages,” an investigator said.
The depression aggravated to debauched behaviour as Khalid found no psychological solace from his dysfunctional family: his parents allegedly quarrelled every day and his two elder sisters, aged 33 and 36 years, were yet to be married off. His two younger brothers too have not found their moorings.
“Family trouble disturbed him no ends … and he released his frustration on unsuspecting women. A few of his victims wanted to meet him but he never did. His sole aim was to annoy his target until she blocked his number,” an officer said.
Psychologists feel a thorough evaluation of the man is needed to understand the root cause of his frustration and perversion.
“There may have certain circumstances or factors in his personal and family life that led to this disorder. The person needs proper treatment and counseling,” said Rajesh Sagar, a professor at the department of psychiatry in AIIMS.
“But this does not mean we are sending a message to people that they can get away easily with such crimes. The offender should be punished lawfully.”
