The national capital may soon have a separate university system based on some of the best performing varsity systems abroad.
The move is part of a comprehensive plan of the city government to establish a set of disciplined-focus smaller universities to generate excellence in the field of education and research.
The separate university system envisages creation of multiple universities and campuses united by a common system of management and governance which would only focus on specialised courses, Education Department officials said.
"The government is very keen to set up a university system for Delhi modelled on high-performing university systems in the US and UK," they said.
They said the institutions be set up under the new university system would be different from the existing universities as they will focus on specific disciplines.
The proposal also finds mention in the action plan of the Delhi Government for the implementation of recommendations of the National Knowledge Commission which was set up by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2005 to prepare a roadmap for transforming India into a knowledge society.
The action plan said a separate university system would encourage flexibility and efficiency as the universities to be set up under it will be smaller in size.
