Delhi Metro chief E Sreedharan, 78, underwent a beating-heart bypass surgery at New Delhi’s Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals on Thursday morning.

Unlike the traditional bypass surgery where the heartbeat is stopped and the patient is put on a heart-lung machine while the doctors operate, during the beating heart bypass, the doctor uses a surgical tool to stabilise a small part of the heart and hold it still, while he sews healthy blood vessels into place.

“He underwent a cardiac bypass surgery today and is recovering in the Intensive Care Unit. Presently his condition is stable,” said a spokesperson from Apollo hospital.

The team, led by senior cardiac surgeon Dr Ganesh K. Mani, conducted the six–hour surgery which began at 9 am.

Sources say, Sreedharan will be kept under observation in hospital for one week.

The DMRC MD had a complete heart block (100 per cent blockage) in the right coronary artery, a main artery that supplies oxygenated blood to the body.

All three major coronary arteries, left anterior descending, circumflex and right coronary artery, were critically blocked.

He was rushed to Apollo on Wednesday morning after he suffered a heart attack at Delhi Airport before he could board a flight to Kolkata at 6.30 am.
