Delhi would soon be able to learn from the experiences of London on urban regeneration.

A team of experts from London is expected to visit India next year to share their expertise on urban development with Delhi and other Indian cities, Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath said on Monday.

Nath had a meeting with Mayor of London Boris Johnson on Monday, along with senior urban development officials of both the countries. The discussion was a follow up to the agreement signed between India and England sometime ago on cooperation on infrastructure development and stronger economic ties.

“London has very successfully been able to have a lot of regeneration. One of the ideas we are trying is transit-oriented development and London has gone ahead with this,” Nath said and suggested Indian cities could learn from the example.

Nath said that London has seen efficient urban development in the last few years and Delhi is on the same path. He also praised the management of heritage buildings in London and said that Delhi can benefit from their expertise.

Nath said a delegation from London, including experts from various disciplines, would visit India in early 2013 and there would be specific discussion on issues like transport, metro and other areas related to urban development. The team would also study rapid urbanisation in Indian cities and the problems and challenges related to them.

Johnson said the discussion today was very “fruitful” and hoped for a positive engagement with India. He also praised the way the Delhi Metro has come up in the Indian capital.
