The Delhi High Court’s order that will see all schools conduct fresh lottery for children seeking nursery admission in the open category has drawn mixed responses from all quarters.
Parents whose admission was scrapped after the transfer points were disallowed are happy to be getting an equal chance. Those who had got a place with only the neighbourhood points are disappointed.
A bigger dissatisfaction, however, has emerged. With the nursery guidelines being mired in some sort of litigation each year, the parents are now seeking a final solution to the problem.
For the past three years one or the other stakeholder has gone to court regarding either the minimum age criteria or the autonomy of minority schools. This is however, the first time the litigation has stretched on till March and the admission process has been delayed. Each year, the guidelines come out in the second week of December and litigation begins in January. The process has been very trying for parents who have had to grapple with one guideline today and another the next day.
The current admission guidelines were lauded by all parents when they were declared as they seemed to give most importance to distance from the school in determining admission.
Once we inspected this deeply, however, it becomes clear that parents with only points for distance don’t stand much chance as compared to those who have siblings and alumni points.
Schools’ point of view
Schools have been harassed the most in the current admission session, with new dictats, guidelines and notifications regarding the admission process landing at their doorstep every fortnight.
The current order to conduct a lottery for the open category again coincides with board exams in schools. During the lottery, parent representatives have to be present and teachers have to be engaged. Schools are now trying to make sure they have resources to do both at the same time.
