Following security concerns raised by intelligence agencies and the need for a separate and safe building, the Delhi police have been floating tenders for more than five years.

Sources in Delhi Police said that the delay was because no bidders were coming forward to accept the tender.

Police commissioner Neeraj Kumar signed the agreement with UNITY Infra Projects Ltd for the project, which includes a residential complex and related infrastructure and services on the prime site at Parliament Street.

The new ‘wi-fi’ enabled building will be built just behind the Parliament Street police station. The current police headquarters was shifted to the public works department (PWD) building at ITO from Kashmere Gate in 1975.

“As per the concession agreement, the project will be completed within 840 days. This building will have a twin tower block of nine storeys each along with interconnecting corridors," a senior police official said.

The central court will be landscaped with trees and built over the basement parking.

The total area available for the police headquarters complex is 8.092 acres.

The building is expected to become operational by February/March 2013.
