Underworld don Chhota Rajan, arrested last week at Bali in Indonesia, will be interrogated by Delhi Police in at least six cases once he is extradited to India in a day or two, Delhi police sources said.
Two officers from Delhi Police Special Cell - DCP Pramod Singh Kushwaha and Inspector Rahul - have been sent to Bali along with officers from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Mumbai Police for Chhota Rajan’s extradition.
The cases in which the underworld gangster is wanted in the Capital were registered between 1999 and 2011 at different police stations in west and south Delhi. Most of them were related to extortion from Delhi’s businessmen, directly or indirectly on the alleged instructions of the underworld don.
All these cases were later transferred to the Special Cell, police’s anti-terror wing, as initial suggested the role of Chhota Rajan’s gang members. Senior officers privy to the probes told HT that of the four to five extortion cases, the gangster’s direct involvement was confirmed in two cases.
The most recent case of extortion, in which the name of Chhota Rajan cropped up during probe, was registered in 2011 at the Chittaranjan Park police station in south Delhi. A local businessman had received extortion phone calls from unknown numbers that included international numbers. Identifying themselves as underworld don Chhota Rajan’s aides, the unknown callers had demanded crores of rupees from the businessman.
“An extortion case was registered and the preliminary probe indicated that the gangster had himself made one of the calls. It was a named FIR that was later transferred to the special cell by the then city police chief. Special cell sleuths will interrogate him in the case once Chhota Rajan’s police custody remand is secured by them,” the officer said.
The other extortion cases were registered in west Delhi’s police stations, including Rajouri Garden police station. A couple of such cases were solved and those arrested confirmed Rajan’s involvement.
Five alleged shooters of the Rajan gang were arrested in a raid on a flat in Subhash Nagar, near Rajouri Garden, in 1999.
