A five-year-old child had a miraculous escape after he was allegedly pulled out of an autorickshaw by a biker who was attempting to snatch his mother’s purse on the busy flyover near Akshardham on Friday afternoon.
Tajender Kaur, who was on her way to a wedding with her two children, was cautious enough to remove her gold jewellery and keep it in her bag, fearing she may be attacked. Little did she know her fears will come true.
When she reached the Khelgaon flyover around 3 pm, two men on a bike, who were allegedly trailing her auto, tried to snatch her purse.
“She fought back. In a statement, she said held on and started shouting for help. Meanwhile, the biker who was riding pulled out her 5-year-old son from inside the auto and he fell on the road. The auto driver immediately stopped the vehicle,” a police officer said.
He added, “The moment her son fell from the auto, the woman let go off the bag and got down to save her son. Luckily, no vehicle was coming from behind and he was saved.”
The boy, Adhyayan, sustained minor injuries but the bikers succeeded in their snatching bid and escaped. “Kaur made a PCR call and a team reached the spot. The boy was discharged after first aid. We recorded the woman’s statement and registered a case in the matter,” a police officer said.
With 9,571 cases of snatching reported in 2016 against 9,896 cases in 2015, Delhi remains vulnerable to street crimes.
The police said they had formed teams to identify and nab the snatchers. “One of them was reportedly wearing a helmet. We have accessed CCTV footage from the area to identify the bikers. The footage is being analysed. We are getting their sketches made. We have made a note of gangs involved in snatching in the area and tracking the movement of the criminals previously involved in such cases. We are seeking help from the local intelligence to solve the case. Arrests will soon be made,” a police officer said.
