Delhiites pulled out more wollen from their winter wardrobe on Wednesday to fight the chill as icy winds and dense fog rang in the New Year's first morning to the national capital.

Though the mercury dipped to a tolerable minimum of 8.5 degree Celsius, up by 0.3 degrees from yesterday and one degree above normal, the winter chill was there due to windy conditions.

However, this is a 'warmest' New Year compared to last year's when the minimum was recorded at 2.6 degree Celsius.

A thick cover of fog also engulfed the capital this morning, adding woes to morning commuters as normal visibility range fell down considerably. Vehicles were seen plying with fog lights.

The weathermen have predicted that fog conditions are likely to remain for next couple of days but with a "progressive decrease" in the intensity and duration.

The Met department forecast says the maximum and minimum for tomorrow will be around 18 and eight degrees Celusis, while the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) predicts it will be 22 and 7 degrees respectively in the next five days.

The last day of of the bygone year was chilly with the maximum and minimum recorded at 8.2 and 16 degrees. The season's lowest temperature of 6.4 degree Celsius was recorded on December 26.
