When Lalita told her parents she wanted to marry Rohit, they had initially resisted. But Karan Singh, Lalita’s father, agreed when Rohit and his family insisted.
“Lalita met Rohit in a gym last year and they began seeing each other,” said Sunita, Lalita’s aunt.
Lalita Dabas, 28 - who married Rohit Kumar, a national kabaddi player in March - hung herself from a ceiling fan at her parents’ home in west Delhi on Monday night, alleging dowry harassment in two-and-half-hour long voice messages, police said. Lalita had left her in-laws house and moved in with her parents in Nangloi a few weeks ago.
Mukul Kharb, Lalita’s cousin, said everything looked “normal” when he visited Lalita’s in-laws house in Nizampur, two days after the wedding.
“Lalita looked happy. Little did I know that things were going to turn for the worse so soon,” said Kharb.
Soon Rohit’s parents began demanding a share in the property of Lalita’s father, said Sunita.
Soniya, Lalita’s sister, said: “He did not speak to her for many days after marriage. Lalita lived with her in-laws, while Rohit was in Mumbai. Fame had gotten to his head. Even now when my sister has died, he has not come,” said Soniya.
Attempts to reach Rohit and his family failed. DCP (West) Vijay Kumar confirmed that Rohit’s house in Kanjhawala, where his parents live, is locked.
Soniya claimed that on September 24, Lalita had a fight with her in-laws after which she returned to her parents’ house. To keep her engaged, her parents got her enrolled in a coaching class where she began preparing for competitive exams.
Soniya also alleged that Rohit had blocked Lalita’s mobile phone number.
Police said they will probe all allegations. An SDM enquiry has also been ordered in the case. An officer said they will contact Rohit, who is in Mumbai.
The youngest of three sisters, Lalita was a Delhi University graduate.
“She had worked as a school teacher for a brief period before marriage. She had to quit after her in-laws had insisted her to stop working,” alleged Soniya.
Police sources said the couple had an arranged marriage. Rohit had got a job in the Indian Navy under sports quota. He missed the opening two seasons of the pro kabaddi, but was impressive in the third season. He represented Patna Pirates and was one of the players who got the most valuable player award. However, in the fourth edition of the pro kabaddi, he played for Bengaluru Bulls.
