A young Delhi traffic police constable lost his life after he was mowed down by a speeding truck in west Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh on Saturday.
Police said the 27-year-old constable had tried to stop the errant truck, which was in a no-entry zone.
Arya Bhushan, the constable, was from Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. He had joined Delhi Police five years ago and is survived by his wife and a two-month-old child, an officer said.
He had been posted in the Punjabi Bagh traffic circle for the past few months.
The truck driver, the officer said, fled after running his vehicle over Bhushan. A case of rash and negligent driving, leading to death, and obstructing a public servant in discharge of public function has been registered against the unidentified driver at the Punjabi Bagh police station.
The police have confiscated the truck which the accused left behind.
The case was registered on the complaint filed by Kanwarpal Singh, 51, who was posted as traffic assistant sub-inspector (ASI) in the Punjabi Bagh traffic circle and a witness to the accident.
Singh in his complaint told the police that he along with his three subordinates - Bhushan, constable Hansraj and constable Satbir - were checking traffic violations of vehicles on Rajouri Garden-Azadpur ring road, near Rajkumar Nursery.
“We were busy booking vehicles which were moving in the no-entry zone. We spotted a speeding truck coming from Rajouri Garden and plying in the no-entry zone. Bhushan signalled the truck driver to stop his vehicle. But the truck hit Bhushan and he fell down. The truck’s rear wheel then ran over Bhushan’s right leg and crushed it badly,” said Singh.
Bhushan was soon after taken to the nearby Maharaja Agrasen Hospital in a private vehicle where he died late in the afternoon. Police said Bhushan died due to excessive bleeding.
